Prof. Dr. Norman Sartorius held a lecture at the University of Sarajevo - Mental health protection in the education system

In the UNSA Rectorate’s Ceremonial Hall, Prof. Dr. Norman Sartorius delivered a lecture within the Mental Health in Bosnia and Herzegovina Project, supported by the Swiss Government and implemented by the Association XY in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the RS, on Wednesday, 3 April 2019, at 10:30.

Prof. Dr. Norman Sartorius is an expert with extensive experience in protecting the rights of people with mental disorders, fighting against stigma and discrimination, and improving the quality of mental health services. He is a member of the British Royal Society of Medicine and during today's lecture he spoke on the protection of mental health of students and teaching staff in the educational process and on factors that contribute to mental health problems in the educational process.

Prior to the Professor Sartorius’ lecture, Prof. Dr. Dženana Husremović, UNSA Vice-Rector  for Research said that preserving metal health during studying was one of the most important things and that UNSA was working on developing a support service for students.

“Keeping mental health during studying during schooling is one of the most important things and competencies that students can gain, especially when it comes to balancing professional and private life. The University of Sarajevo, as the most prestigious and oldest university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is working to develop a support service for students to preserve mental health” added Prof. Dr. Dženana Husremović.

“The education system and the health system are very close, and they are often unreasonably separated and the education system could help to improve and preserve mental health, not just those who in that system could already be of assistance to all the populations as a whole. There is a whole system of measures that can be applied, starting from reflecting on the extent to which better knowledge can lead to the prevention of mental illness, to what extent good education of a person can help in treatment, as well as to what extent the education system can to restore value to mental health,” said Prof. Dr. Norman Sartorius adding that it is one of the great problems we encounter in all populations.

The Mental Health Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina aims to improve the social inclusion and quality of life of people with mental health problems and reduce the risk of developing mental disorders.
