University of Sarajevo: Embracing Peace for a Brighter Future

Univerzitet u Sarajevu: Promocija mirovnih dijaloga kao putokaz u svjetliju budućnost

For over two decades, the University of Sarajevo has forged a strong partnership with Prof. Massimo Maria Caneva, the president of the AESI organization and organizer of the Rome International seminars. According to his words, the University of Sarajevo has been and continues to lead university cooperation for peace in the BiH and the Balkans.

This collaboration has seamlessly integrated students from the University of Sarajevo into the program for several years. The seminar catalyzes students, providing an immersive educational journey, fostering discussions, learning from global experts, and facilitating the exchange of ideas with peers from diverse backgrounds and faculties. Such initiatives stand as pivotal pillars in shaping the education of upcoming generations.

The overarching objective of the AESI organization and Rome International Seminars is to equip students, professors, politicians, and military personnel with the principles of soft power. This unique skill set involves the art of foreign policy development through conversation and dialogue, steering away from reliance on armed forces. Against the backdrop of the complex global scenario, marked by conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and other regions, we find ourselves amidst a technological renaissance, embracing the advancements in artificial intelligence and widespread digitization. The Z generation holds unprecedented potential to contribute to a better world and elevate humanity.

The Western Balkans is currently in the spotlight of the European Union, and a recent forum in Rome saw the representation of the University of Sarajevo through Prof. Tarik Zaimović, the vice-rector on behalf of the rector, and Prof. Enita Nakaš, the vice-rector for international cooperation. The seminar underscored the integral role of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the broader European framework but also highlighted that the transformation of society and political leadership can only come through education based on human rights and shared values.

Among the distinguished participants at the seminar was Dr. Carlo Corazza - Director of the European Parliament in Italy

Dr Antonio Parenti - Head of the Representation in Italy of the European Commission,  Amb. Vincenzo Celeste - Italian Ambassador to the European Union (Bruxelles), Amb. Gabriele Checchia - AESI Scientific Committee and Former Ambassador to NATO, Gen. Franco Federici Military Advisor of the President of Council of Ministers and AESI Scientific Committee. Representatives of Universities from Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, University of Banja Luka, University of Dzemal Bijedic, University of Mostar (SUM), as well as many students.

The long-standing tradition of collaboration with Prof. Massimo and membership in the EUPeace Alliance demonstrates the University of Sarajevo's commitment to educating generations that will cherish human rights and values.
