“University of Sarajevo: 76 Years of Tradition, Knowledge, and Excellence

Univerzitet u Sarajevu: 76 godina tradicije, znanja izvrsnosti

Today, we celebrate the anniversary of the University of Sarajevo – an institution of knowledge, tradition, and progress. We proudly highlight decades of dedication to education, science, research, and the public mission of societal development.

2 December 1949, will remain permanently recorded as one of the most significant dates in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Now, exactly 76 years later, on that day, the first university was established in our homeland – the University of Sarajevo.

The first session of the University of Sarajevo Assembly was held on 2 December 1949, when the first rector and vice-rector were elected. This historic moment marked a turning point in the economic, social, and cultural development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, laying the foundations for progress in education and science in our country.

Over the past 76 years, the University of Sarajevo has played a key role in the development of education, science, research, and arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving as a pillar of academic and societal community. This anniversary reminds us of the continuity of our mission, the values we uphold, and our responsibility towards future generations.

The University of Sarajevo remains a place where tradition meets modern science, where new generations shape their future, and where the foundations for further societal progress are laid.

We thank all students, teachers, researchers, and staff whose work and dedication contribute to the development and strengthening of the University.

Happy birthday to the University of Sarajevo – with sincere gratitude to everyone who makes it what it is.
