From Historical Experiences to Contemporary Challenges: International Panel Discussion on Turkiye's NATO Adaptation and Energy Security

Od historijskih iskustava do savremenih izazova: međunarodna panel diskusija o prilagođavanju Turske NATO-u i energetskoj sigurnosti

The Faculty of Economics at the University of Sarajevo organized an international panel discussion titled "Elusive Pursuit for Security and Prosperity: Turkiye's Adaptation to NATO at the Advent of the Cold War," moderated by Prof. Dr. Adnan Efendić. The panel offered an interdisciplinary perspective on the historical, economic, political, and security circumstances that shaped Turkey's approach to NATO membership, connecting historical insights with contemporary issues of international security.

During the panel, Assistant Prof. Dr. Kenan Hodžić spoke on energy security in the Western Balkans and the lessons the region can draw from the Turkish experience. He emphasized that alliance membership alone does not guarantee energy security; rather, it is the result of specific infrastructure projects, strong institutions, and the diversification of supply sources and routes. He addressed Turkiye's role as an energy hub, noting that while it opens opportunities for the region, it also has its limitations. He particularly highlighted the importance of protecting critical infrastructure, as every new inter-connector and digital management system represents a new potential target.

This event once again demonstrated that historical experiences are not merely a look back but serve as a useful guide for contemporary issues of economy, security, and cooperation.
