Cantonal Student Hub Opened at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sarajevo: Over 1,000 Square Meters for Learning, Ideas, and Networking

The Cantonal Student Hub has been opened at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sarajevo. Spanning over 1,000 square meters, this space is designed for students, institutions, the academic community, and the business and startup ecosystems. The Hub was established through collaboration between the Ministry of Economy of Sarajevo Canton and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sarajevo, with the goal of strengthening the connection between knowledge, youth, and the economy.

The objective is to facilitate the journey for students from an initial idea, through expert and mentoring support and the acquisition of practical experience, to a concrete project, startup, or sustainable business entity.

The Cantonal Student Hub at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will be available not only to students but also to entrepreneurs, non-governmental organizations, the academic community, and institutions for the development of joint projects, knowledge exchange, and new forms of cooperation.

Zlatko Mijatović, Minister of Economy of Sarajevo Canton, emphasized that opening the Hub is not just an investment in space, but primarily an investment in people and their knowledge.

"There is no shortage of good ideas among young people. What is often lacking is a place where they can take the first step, present an idea, develop it, and reach the people who can help them. With this Hub, we want to fill the gap between knowledge and its practical application, enabling students to have a clearer path from their first idea to a project, startup, or sustainable business entity. Investing in today's students is simultaneously an investment in the future strength of the Sarajevo Canton economy," stated Minister Mijatović.

Prof. Dr. Haris Lulić, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sarajevo, emphasized that today marks the opening of doors to cooperation, new ideas, and innovations:

"We want to create a place where students, the academic community, the economy, government institutions, and the non-governmental sector can meet, so that knowledge can be connected with real needs, and problems can be turned into projects, innovations, and new business opportunities. The success of this Hub will not be measured by the number of events, but by what emerges from it – new partnerships, projects, startups, and opportunities for young people to contribute to the development of our Canton and society as a whole with their knowledge and ideas."

The opening was attended by Nihad Uk, Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton; Ministers in the Government of Sarajevo Canton Dušanka Bošković, Afan Kalamujić, and Omer Osmanović; Vibor Handžić, Deputy Speaker of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly; Assembly Deputies Vildana Bešlija and Elza Gaković; representatives of cantonal institutions; Tarik Zaimović, University of Sarajevo Rector; representatives of the University, the economy, and the student and startup communities. Irfan Mirza, a long-time Microsoft expert and Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo Canton, spoke about the importance of such spaces for connecting knowledge, talent, and the business community.

"Silicon Valley was created precisely on this idea – connecting knowledge, talent, and the business community. When I heard about this Hub, it reminded me of that story. It truly makes me happy that Sarajevo has gained such a space, where young people will be able to develop ideas, learn from each other, and create new business opportunities," said Mirza.

The Cantonal Student Hub will be a place for the continuous connection of students, entrepreneurs, the private sector, the academic and business communities, and other interested individuals and organizations. Through programs, events, and joint projects, it will focus on the development of knowledge, ideas, cooperation, and new business opportunities. The Hub will be an open space for various initiatives, meetings, educations, presentations, and other activities that contribute to connecting people, exchanging experiences, and creating new opportunities.
