Inauguration of the First Neutral Point of Exchange for Internet Traffic in Bosnia and Herzegovina - BHNIX

On Wednesday, 27 November 2019, the University of Sarajevo University Teleinformatics Center (UTIC) held the opening ceremony for the first neutral internet traffic exchange point in Bosnia and Herzegovina - BHNIX. The project’s aim is to make a platform for Internet traffic exchange, innovation and cooperation in BiH.

The attendees were greeted by Rector, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj reminding the attendees that University of Sarajevo is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and that during this period the University has been striving to be the development projects initiator, a fertile ground for innovation and a socially responsible institution.

Prof. Dr. Elmedin Selmanović, University Tele-Informatics Center (UTIC) director, commented on the historical development of IXP and spoke about future plans for the project of establishing a point for sharing Internet content. He stressed that the idea of establishing IXP has been in existence in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a long time and was updated in December 2017 at the BH Internet Governance Forum when it was proposed and concluded that the University of Sarajevo should be an exchange point.

BHNIX’s technical solutions were presented by Enes Halilović, UTIC Network Systems Designer.

The gratitude was expressed to the Ministry of Communications of BiH for giving the momentum to this project, and to the telecom operators that participated in this project, which was a basic precondition for its success, namely: BH Telecom, Logosoft and Telemach.

The event was attended by ISOC, BH Telecom, Logosoft, Telemach, University of Sarajevo, University Tele-Information Center (UTIC), and system integrator companies representatives.
