University of Sarajevo to host again the summer program "Comparative Public Health: Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina" of the prestigious Northwestern University in 2025

Univerzitet u Sarajevu ponovo domaćin ljetnjem programu „Komparativno javno zdravstvo: Srbija i Bosna i Hercegovina“ prestižnog američkog Univerziteta Northwestern i tokom 2025. godine

Students from the outstanding Northwestern University in the state of Illinois in the United States will again arrive to the University of Sarajevo this year as part of the summer school titled "Comparative Public Health: Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This study abroad program has been successfully implemented for many years in collaboration with Northwestern University, the University of Belgrade, and the University of Sarajevo, and continues throughout July and August 2025, with a rich program aimed at introducing the Bosnian-Herzegovinian past, cultural diversity, contemporary socio-political relations, and the functioning of the healthcare system.

 

The program maintains a special focus on post-conflict social challenges, confronting the past, and the role of educational and health institutions in building peace and trust. The summer school represents an important segment of Northwestern's Global Learning program, and its continuous implementation with the support of the teaching and administrative staff of the University of Sarajevo, and non-governmental organizations affirms the strong partnership and mutual trust strenghtened each year.

 

The program includes interactive lectures, practical workshops, visits to museums, memorial centers, healthcare institutions, and mental health organizations, as well as two professional study trips in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through these activities, students have the opportunity to acquire insight in the cultural and historical diversity of the country, as well as in the complex forms of the 1990s war and post-war trauma. After their study period in Belgrade, American students continue their program in Sarajevo, where, during a multi-week stay, they explore the layered identities of Bosnia and Herzegovina through the lens of languages, cultures, and contemporary social developments.

 

This program, continued in 2025, represents an opportunity for the University of Sarajevo to reaffirm its commitment to international cooperation and academic excellence, in partnership with Northwestern University – a globally recognized educational institution whose activities take place worldwide and are regularly ranked among the most prestigious universities in the world.
