The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Sarajevo procured 5G telecommunication equipment

Elektrotehnički fakultet Univerziteta u Sarajevu nabavio 5G telekomunikacijsku opremu

The University of Sarajevo Faculty of Electrical Engineering has completed the installation of modern 5G equipment in the laboratory for software-defined networks at the Department of Telecommunications. It is 5G about equipment based on a combination of universal programmable radio communication hardware and highly flexible software. With the help of the purchased equipment, a 5G standalone (SA) network was implemented, more precisely an independent 5G network that does not require the existence of a 4G infrastructure to function. This reduces the cost of maintaining the network and base stations, and creates good preconditions for improving performance, increasing energy efficiency and reducing unwanted electromagnetic radiation into the environment.

Doz. Dr. Enio Kaljić, Grad. Eng. El, the head of the Laboratory for Software-Defined Networks, pointed out that this is the first academic 5G standalone network in the region. The purchased equipment will be used in the teaching process and will significantly expand the capacity for scientific research. The equipment is open, which enables simple software upgrades and the development of new telecommunications services.

Procurement of equipment is supported within the EU Erasmus+ project BENEFIT, “Development of long-term programmable data plane architecture of the fifth generation (5G) mobile network” the project under the auspices of the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, and the project “Improving the performance of fifth generation mobile networks by applying the concept of long - term programmability”under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Education and Science. Procurement of the 5G terminal equipment is supported by UniBox.

Head of the Department of Telecommunications, Doz. Dr. Miralem Mehić, Grad. Eng. El. stated that the Faculty of Electrical Engineering has carried out a significant modernization of telecommunications equipment in the past two years. Thanks to cooperation with industrial partners and engagement in EU projects, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering has made a significant step forward in modernizing its resources in line with European standards. Students who enroll in the Department of Telecommunications will have the opportunity to study according to modern standards and use advanced laboratory tools. In addition to a wide range of research areas such as quantum cryptography, cellular and wireless networks, telecommunications security, Internet-of-Things and LoraWAN networks, the Department of Telecommunications will now be able to actively explore modern 5G networks.
