Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, University of Sarajevo Participates in Workshop on Urban Gardening and Crop Rotation

On Saturday, 10 October 2026, the workshop "Green Spaces that Feed: Urban Gardens and the Importance of Crop Rotation" was held at the OPZ Sinergija Plus estate in Pazarić. The event was organized by the Center for Energy, Environment, and Resources (CENER 21) with the participation of the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences.
The workshop was implemented as part of the "Green Spaces, Safe Places" campaign through the "Climate Bridges – Network in Action" project. Its goal was to raise awareness about the importance of urban and peri-urban green spaces for strengthening local community resilience to climate change, as well as improving health and quality of life.
The workshop was led by Assistant Prof. Dr. Ćerima Zahirović Sinanović from the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences. Through practical and interactive work, participants learned about the importance of crop rotation for plant health, soil fertility preservation, and sustainable food production. During group work, they designed their own crop rotation plans and discussed possibilities for applying the acquired knowledge in practice.
Permaculture principles, which involve designing productive and diverse spaces in harmony with natural processes, play a significant role in planning urban gardens. Preserving soil fertility, rational water use, composting, and plant species diversity contribute to sustainable food production, biodiversity conservation, and a higher quality living environment.
Through participation in such activities, the Faculty contributes to knowledge transfer to the local community and the application of sustainable practices in food production. In this direction, the Faculty plans to launch a lifelong learning program in the field of urban gardening, intended for those interested in acquiring knowledge and practical skills for sustainable food cultivation in urban environments. More information about the program and the application process will be published subsequently.
We thank the Center for Energy, Environment, and Resources (CENER 21) for the organization and cooperation, OPZ Sinergija Plus for their hospitality, and all participants for their interest and active contribution.
