As a sign of two significant anniversaries in the history of music - 150 years of the birth of Arnold Schönberg and 200 years of the birth of Anton Bruckner - at the UNSA Music Academy on 7 November 2024, a concert was held by Marialena Fernandes and Ranko Marković, pianists of international renown, who presented the unusual program concept 'Schönberg@home - and Bruckner is also invited'.

Fernandes and Marković have been performing as a duo for over two decades, and the focus of their concert activity is four-hand piano arrangements. In the spirit of commemorating the birth anniversaries of two Austrian composers, and at the same time reviving a special phenomenon of performance practice of the late 19th and early 20th centuries - processing, performing and listening to various musical works in four-hand piano arrangements as everyday musical interactions of that era ubiquitous in bourgeois and aristocratic salons - the concert program 'Schönberg@home - and Bruckner is also invited' was conceived. Adopting the manner of "home music" and eliminating the distance between performer and audience, this duo performed works from Schönberg's and Bruckner's oeuvre in arrangements for piano four hands, as well as transcriptions prepared by the two composers for this performance format.

The concert opened with the performance of the Overture from the opera 'Il barbiere di Siviglia' by G. Rossini (arr. A. Schönberg), after which Marković interpreted the 'Intermezzo' op. 116, no. 5 by J. Brahms, Six Small Pieces for Piano Op. 19 by A. Schönberg, and then Brahms' "Intermezzo" op. 116, no. 6 and Schönberg's Piano Piece Op. 33a. The program also included the piano composition 'Erinnerung', WAB 117 by A. Bruckner, played by Marialena Fernandes.

On this occasion, the audience could hear the 'Scherzo' from Bruckner's Symphony no. 3 in the arrangement for piano four hands arranged by G. Mahler, as well as Schönberg's Chamber Symphony Op. 9 in transcription by F. Greissle.

The concert was realized as part of the Concert Season of the Music Academy of the University of Sarajevo, in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum Sarajevo.
