The 484th Gazi Husrev-Bey Library in Sarajevo’s Anniversary Marked
On 15 January 2021, in the Great Hall of the Gazi Husrev-Bey’s Library in Sarajevo, the 484th anniversary of this cultural institution was marked.
The ceremony began with a passage from the Qur’an recited by young hafiz Osman Malkić, a Gazi Husrev-Bey Madrasah graduate.
After the moderator’s introductory speech, Šahsena Đulović, at the very beginning Director, Mr. Sc. Osman Lavić, emphasizing that Gazi Husrev-Bey's library continued to perform its function in the past year, regardless of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, and to provide services to its users. He referred, among other things, to the collection of library materials, especially manuscripts, i.e. the enrichment of the Library's funds, which was intensive this year as well.
After the address of the director, a lecture on “Protection of cultural heritage in the Covid-19 era” was held by librarian Mr. Sc. Ejla Ćurovac, and conservator Ruhulah Hodžić, employees of the Library. The lecture addressed the issue of preserving cultural heritage, especially the written heritage in extraordinary circumstances, with special reference to the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic that marked 2020.
As part of the program, a letter of thanks was awarded to the former director acting of the Library emeritus Prof. Dr. Jusuf Ramić for his contribution to the work of Gazi Husrev-Bey's library. Prof. Dr. Jusuf Ramić held the position of acting director in the period 1982–1985. He was also a longtime member of the Library Council (1975-1985), as well as the editor-in-chief of the Gazi Husrev-bey Library Annals.
Also, on this occasion, letters of thanks were awarded to the donors of manuscripts and other library materials in 2020: Abdulah Hadžijusufović, Ibrahim Kubura and Amel Čusta.
At the end of the ceremony, the reis-l-ulema of the Islamic Community in BiH, Husein ef. Kavazović, congratulated the anniversary, pointed out the important role of Gazi Husrev-Bey's library in our society.
The exhibition “150 years since the birth of reis-l-ulema Džemaludin ef. Čaušević “, by Mr. Sc. Meho Manjga was opened.
Given the circumstances of the pandemic, the event was organized in the presence of a small number of guests with a live online broadcast (YouTube channel and Facebook page of Gazi Husrev-Bey's library), as well as the online presence of representatives of libraries operating within the Islamic Community in BiH.
