UNSA Faculty of Health Studies Students Take Part in Tuberculosis Awareness Week

Merisa Zubača, Amna Šebo, and Armin Masnopita, students in the Nursing program at the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Health Studies, actively participated in the Tuberculosis Awareness Week program organized by the Sarajevo Canton Red Cross.
The students’ participation was proposed by Prof. Dr. Amer Ovčina, Chair of the Health Commission of the Sarajevo Canton Red Cross, once again highlighting the importance of cooperation between the academic community and organizations working to improve public health.
As part of the program, an information booth was set up in central Sarajevo on 21 September 2026, where students spoke with members of the public, provided basic information about tuberculosis, and distributed awareness materials about this infectious disease. Visitors to the booth also received gifts of healthy food, including fruit and healthy cakes, reinforcing the importance of healthy lifestyle habits and taking care of one’s health.
Several television stations covered the event. Merisa Zubača, a Faculty of Health Studies student who earned her master’s degree in Nursing in early September 2026, spoke to Sarajevo Canton Television.
On this occasion, Merisa emphasized the importance of continually raising public awareness of tuberculosis:
“Tuberculosis is a public health problem, and it is not a disease confined to the past. Unfortunately, it is still present, and through today’s activity, we want to draw attention to it and eliminate the stigma closely associated with tuberculosis. The disease can be treated and cured, but it is essential that those affected receive full support, primarily from healthcare professionals, but also, of course, from their communities.”
In her remarks, she discussed World Health Organization statistics, the importance of recognizing tuberculosis symptoms early and seeking timely medical attention, and the treatment and nursing care of people with tuberculosis.
The participation of Faculty of Health Studies students in this activity provides a valuable example of connecting theoretical knowledge with practical community engagement. Through direct contact with members of the public, the students had the opportunity to further develop their communication and health education skills while helping raise awareness of tuberculosis prevention, early detection, and treatment.
The Sarajevo Canton Red Cross recognized the significance and value of the volunteer contributions made by students in the Faculty of Health Studies’ Nursing program. This cooperation will continue through joint activities aimed at health promotion, health education, and supporting public health.
The Faculty of Health Studies commends and thanks Merisa Zubača, Amna Šebo, and Armin Masnopita for their dedication, sense of responsibility, and willingness to devote their knowledge and time to improving the health of the community.
