Members of the Department of Physics, Prof. Dr. Benjamin Fetić and Academician Prof. Dr. Dejan Milošević, have published a scientific paper in the journal Physical Review A — published by the American Physical Society—in which they theoretically analyzed results obtained using the well-known experimental technique known as "attoclock."

By employing numerical solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, the strong-field approximation, quantum orbit theory, and classical trajectory analysis, the paper demonstrates that the so-called deflection angle in the attoclock setup can be largely attributed to the influence of the Coulomb field on the electron after its release from the atom.

This result contradicts the initial interpretation, which linked the deflection angle to the time it takes for an electron to tunnel through the potential barrier formed by the combined action of the Coulomb and laser fields.

The findings of this study confirm conclusions from earlier analyses based on alternative theoretical models and further contribute to the understanding of the physical processes occurring during the tunnel ionization of atoms in strong laser fields.
