Regional Workshop on Local Knowledge for Biodiversity and Climate Resilience Held in Sarajevo

The regional workshop “Harnessing Indigenous and Local Knowledge for Biodiversity and Climate Resilience in the Western Balkans”, organized by UNESCO and partners was hosted on 8–9 September 2025 hosted. The event brought together academics, international organizations, government representatives, and local communities to highlight the role of indigenous and local knowledge in biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction.

Particular attention was given to the presentation of Armin Macanović and Ena Hatibović from the University of Sarajevo, who authored the traditional knowledge publication within Bosnia and Herzegovina’s National Ecosystem Assessment. Their contribution, through showcasing the publication process and participating in panel discussions, was recognized as an important example of how local knowledge can be linked with scientific research and policymaking in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development.

The workshop concluded with an agreement to jointly prepare a working paper, “Reviving Roots: Indigenous and Local Knowledge for Biodiversity and Climate Resilience in the Western Balkans”, and to develop initial pilot projects based on local practices, aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and accessing international funding opportunities.
