On Tuesday, 5 June 2018, University of Sarajevo organized a round table “Education – driver of BH development “  in cooperation with Sarajevo Canton high schools with the aim of improving the education sector and creating attractive policies for youth retention in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In introductory remarks, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, University of Sarajevo Rector and Prof. Dr. Elvir Kazazović, Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Sarajevo Canton, opened the event.
In  opening address, Rector Škrijelj emphasized the fact that as an academic community we have the obligation and the duty to offer adequate models of our contribution in solving with the Sarajevo high schools and secondary schools and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Canton Sarajevo as well as with the relevant representatives of the business sector these problems.
“Through better education, which increases employment prospects in the local labor market, we must create the conditions for young people to have the least reason to go. Reforms of the education system that would reduce the gap between education and labor market needs so far have not yielded adequate results, so new ways of action need to be found in order to stop these negative processes” said Rector Škrijelj.

In his speech, Minister Kazazović emphasized the importance of organizing events like this one and linking  with the primary, secondary and higher education. He also stressed the need to undertake a series of analyzes to determine the real labor market needs. He also added that the cooperation of secondary and higher education in the future will enable adequate planning with the aim of aligning education with labor market needs, enabling young people to provide conditions for staying in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The idea for this roundtable came from a meeting between Rector and Sarajevo Gymnasium’s Directors School on 9 May when it was discussed about improving the education sector and creating attractive policies for youth retention in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is concluded that education must be viewed holistically with all its components - basic-middle-high - and that it is only in this way a strategic thinking of education as a whole that will help the development of responsible and independent young people entering the labor market.

Round table panelists were: prof. Dr. Dženana Husremović, Vice-Rector for Research and Research at the University of Sarajevo, Naida Hota-Muminović, Director of the First Bosniak Gymnasium, Seid Alibegović, Second Gymnasium Director, Dr Muris Čičić, Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Suzana Tihi- Babić, Human Resources Manager, Addiko Bank dd. The moderator of the round table was Saša Madacki, Head of the Department of Education at the University of Sarajevo.

At the end of the roundtable, it was concluded through discussions of the present that the need for organizing such talks is extremely important and in the forthcoming period to pay attention to employability, employment and labor market links as well as to continue work on linking gymnasiums, secondary schools and universities through joint initiatives.
