Open Lecture on the Occasion of the Independence Day of BiH

Prof. dr. Selmo Cikotić

Independence and prospects of Bosnia and Herzegovina

On the occasion of the 1st of March - Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the University of Sarajevo, on 28 February 2018, Prof. Dr. Selmo Cikotić held a lecture on topic “Independence and perspectives of Bosnia and Herzegovina”..

Opening speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, Rector. In his lecture he was stressing that March 1 is a day of pride and determination, the day when Bosnians and Herzegovinians of all nationalities opted for sovereign, independent, independent and integral Bosnia and Herzegovina, a state of equal people and citizens.
“This important event in the history of our homeland will be remembered as the day when Bosnia and Herzegovina, after centuries of foreign rule, renewed its sovereignty and became an independent state. Being homeless is the same as being and without home, and that is best known by peoples around the world who have not exercised this right for centuries. Therefore, let us be proud of the achievements of our one and only Bosnia and Herzegovina” said Rector and congratulated the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Speaking on the topic "Independence and Prospects of Bosnia and Herzegovina", Prof. Cikotić expressed the opinion that the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as one of the fundamental values of each state, has its own specificities. For the reason that through the history and long duration of BiH, it has been tried, tested and disputed in different ways and constantly, in different ways, circumstances required, always succeeded in defending and preserving it.
Emphasizing that Bosnian-Herzegovinian spirituality shows the vitality, the power and the ability to last, and to look for the prosperity of the Bosnian state, Professor Cikotić stated: “When we think about the perspective, we must bear in mind that hatred cannot be beaten with hatred, that we will not be dark and cannot win in darkness, that we need the values of a higher level, that hatred must be answered by reason, tolerance and love, and that the darkness must be won must enter the light”.

In the lecture, Prof. Cikotić also referred to the quality of education, and cited the Renaissance sage Erasmus that there is no better investment in the future of one nation, one nation than an investment in the education of its young people.
“We can notice that there may be no greater danger for BiH from erosion and a decline in the quality of education in it,” said Prof.  Cikotić. He also noted that the University of Sarajevo and members of the academic community are individually fighting against the education erosion. He also underlined that education is not an expense, as many in this country observe, but one of the largest investments. He ended his presentation by congratulating the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
