The representative of the University of Sarajevo - Institute for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Ph.D. Belma Kalamujić Stroil, participated at the 8th International Barcode of Life conference (iBOL2019). She presented the modern application of the DNA barcoding method which the scientists of our University employed to provide the first molecular data on the endemic B&H caddisfly, Rhyacophila bosnica.

The abstract was published in the renowned journal Genome (https://doi.org/10.1139/gen-2019-0083).

During the conference, dr.sc. Belma Kalamujić Stroil held a working meeting with dr.sc. Paul Hebert from the University of Guelph, Canada, the founder of the renowned Center for Biodiversity Genomics and the creator of the DNA barcoding method. The goal of the meeting was to consider the possibility for our University to participate in the worldwide BIOSCAN project, worth 180 million US dollars. The aim of this project is to generate DNA barcoding data for 10 million biological species on the planet, explore interactions between biological species by analyzing symbiomes and analyze the biological community at 2000 locations around the globe. During the meeting, the significance of the biodiversity of our country and region was particularly emphasized.
