The Faculty of Electrical Engineering is pleased to invite you to HACKATHON from the field of quantum internet to be held on 5 and 6 November!

All interested parties are welcome with the *mandatory registration* required by the logistics. Participation is *free* and seats are limited!

Important dates:

  • 12 August 2019: Opening application forms
  • *15  September 2019*: Final application deadline
  • 30 September 2019: Announcement of the final list of participants
  • Last weeks of October 2019: Introductory webinar for all Hackathon participants
  • 5-6 November 2019: Pan-European Quantum Internet Hackathon takes place at all five hubs / locations

Details and application forms are available at: https://labs.ripe.net/Members/ulka_athale_1/take-part-in-pan-european-quantum-internet-hackathon.

HacjathonFor the first time, a Hackathon will be held simultaneously at five connected sites or “nodes” across Europe. Participants from all five locations will form teams that will tackle challenges, and may even form teams with multiple nodes (depending on the number of participants enrolled). Experts and jury members will also be available guides.

Hackathon Challenge

The goal of this hackathon is to develop some of the first applications that use quantum mechanics to secure their Internet communication. An example of such an application is an Internet browser that can load a website over an encrypted HTTPS connection using a secret key generated by the Quantum Key Distribution Protocol (QKD). Similarly, many other applications that need to encrypt internet traffic, such as emails or network messages, can be integrated with QKD. It can even extend to  OpenSSL to the QKD API to facilitate integration for future applications.

While the quantum network is not yet available, a simulated version will be provided that connects all participating nodes. The simulated network will expose the same API used in the first show network in the Netherlands, and all applications developed on this hackathon will be able to run on real hardware as soon as they become available.

All interested are welcome!

Interested in Quantum Internet? Passionate about developing new technology? We are looking for software developers, network operators and equipment suppliers, as well as general web, privacy and cryptography enthusiasts (students, researchers, industry professionals) interested in Quantum Internet technology to participate in this pan-European event. Each node can accept about 20 participants based on its capacity, which means we have approximately 100 seats available at all five nodes.

If interested, file an application form before the deadline and be sure to choose the node of your choice! Registration is done individually while the formation of teams is done subsequently (based on the number of participants registered).

Before the event

Applicants can use the discussion list, EtherPad, and IRC to help plan collaboration. We will also organize an introductory webinar for participants on available tools and proposed projects.

During the event

Participants will work in small teams and each team will focus on the selected project. All source code developed during the hackathon will be publicly licensed and made available on GitHub and made available to the entire community for use.

Upon completion of the hackathon

Since we want to focus on collaboration, not competition, there will be no winner. We will present all achievements during the final session.

Participating organizations

  • CNRS, Paris
  • QuTech, Delft Technical University (TU Delft)
  • University of Sarajevo
  • University of Padua
  • Trinity College Dublin
  • Quantum Internet Alliance
  • RIPE NCC
  • Veriqloud

We are looking for additional sponsors

Each of our previous hackathons was supported by one or more sponsors. Sponsors help financially, logistically and by demonstrating support for Free and Open Source Development Tools (FLOSS). As a sponsor, you will be promoted during the event and in all our communications (announcements, blog posts, social media); and you will have that warm, fuzzy glow to support the community effort!

We are seeking financial support in the range of € 2,000 to € 20,000. We will spend your money renting a location, providing food and drinks for participants, providing partial travel support to encourage participant diversity, T-shirts, good coffee and, if possible, dinner and drinks. We prefer NOT to give material or financial rewards to participants, as this event is focused on collaboration rather than competition.

Previous hackathon sponsors included Comcast, Facebook, Akamai, ISOC, Euro-IX, DENIC, Afilias, ThousandEyes, Farsight Security, Juniper Networks.
