The OBALA Open Stage was established at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo as a facility where teaching is carried out, student activities from areas of directing, acting and dramaturgy presented, professional theater productions present and film screenings organized.
The ASU Rules of Procedure from 1985 states: “As the Rules of Procedure for the Obala Open Stage were adopted last year, and earlier this year Arts Council of the Scene formed, in the Statute’s draft it is prescribed as a separate operating unit.
This year, the Open Scene will be organized in a way that the artistic activities of this Academy’s students will be displayed more than before publicly.
In that regard, the Academy will bring to the fore Open scenes activities (with topics of stage projects, exercises), organize the first forms of cooperation with CEDUS and Skenderija etc. For the Open scene artistic head was elected assistant professor Emir Kusturica.”In the first Open Scenes Arts were elected: Emir Kusturica (artistic director), Miroslav MANDIĆ, Mirza IDRIZOVIĆ, Zehra KREHO, Nikola STOJANOVIĆ, Sena MUSTAJBAŠIĆ, Jelena ČOVIĆ and Željko NINČIĆ.
The Academy was founded in December 1981, and Obala Open Scene in November 1984. In a short time, with the help of their staff, professors and students, it became the most interesting theater places in the former Yugoslavia. Many performances staged at this scene - „Audicija“, „ Čudo u Šarganu“, „Ples 80 -ih“, „Tetovirano pozorište“, „Mrešćenje šarana“, „Ćelava pjevačica“, „Dame biraju“, „Ludilo u dvoje“, „Divlje meso“, „Sav taj Jazz“ etc. will be remembered.
