Building a Quality and Competitive Education System in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Izgradnja kvalitetnog i konkurentnog obrazovnog sistema u Bosni i Hercegovini

The University of Sarajevo and Sarajevo Lyceums Warn of Alarmingly Low Number of Enrolled Students

Today, a meeting between University of Sarajevo’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj and Sarajevo Lyceums directors was held at Rector's Office. The aim behind the meeting was trying to improve the education sector and create attractive policies for retention of youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The present state of affairs in Sarajevo Canton education was discussed, with special emphasis placed on lyceum and university education. On this occasion, it was pointed out that the number of enrolled lyceum students in Sarajevo Canton is reduced to a historical minimum. Obala Lyceum Director, Mr. Benjamin Hedžić stated: “If the enrollment policy reduces the number of students in schools that prepare students for Faculties, it directly reflects in the number of enrolled students at the University of Sarajevo, which in the long run opposes the Sarajevo Canton’s education strategy.” The latest census in BiH also recorded an alarmingly low rate of highly educated population, and it was pointed out that these issues should be dealt with urgently.

Rector Škrijelj emphasized the importance of collaboration between the University lyceums, as schools that work according to the programs that prepare students for continuing their education at HEIs. The goal of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s education policy should be strengthening the quality education system that will motivate young people to continue their education at the University of Sarajevo and contribute to the development of society.
The meeting participants also concluded that it is necessary to change the enrollment policy in secondary schools- i.e. to have approved higher number of enrollment places, because it is evident that the interest for these schools is greatest, as well as the need for future students. As a contribution to the joint performance, a Round Table “Education for a Better Future” was announced to be held in the UNSA Administrative Office on 5 June 2018.
